This City & Guilds course meets the national occupational standards for working in low-risk confined spaces across both water and non-water industries.

Aims & Objectives

Water Industry Applications Include: Potable water operations, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning, confined spaces subject to surface water flooding.

Non-Water Industry Applications Include: Pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacturing and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power and utilities, gas and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, quarrying, and tunnelling operations.

Course Agenda

The training is delivered through a mix of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments, with assessments comprising both theory and practical tests. The agenda includes:

  • Preparing to Work Safely in Low Risk Confined Spaces:
    Checking of equipment, obtaining authorisation, arranging communications and maintaining a safety zone.
  • Entering and Exiting Low Risk Confined Spaces:
    Set up and record results of monitoring equipment, conduct a safety inspection, enter and exit the space in line with procedures.
  • Equipment and Tools: Pre-use and post-use checks, including gas detectors and PPE.
  • Safe Systems of Work: Implementation of safe working systems such as communication methods and lone working procedures.
  • Emergency Management: Procedures for handling emergencies, such as safe exit in a dangerous situation.
  • Principles of Low Risk Confined Space Work: Core principles and best practices, such as, health and safety, environmental legislation, identifying emergencies and team job roles.
  • Standard Protocols: Identifying the confined space classification and explaining entry procedure.
  • Assessments: Practical and written evaluations to ensure competency.

Course Duration and Requirements

This one-day course is ideal for individuals working in low-risk confined environments. It covers essential safety preparations, safe entry and exit practices, correct use of equipment and tools, adherence to protocols, and emergency response procedures.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • No conditions affecting eyesight, hearing, heart, blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights or confined spaces, vertigo, balance issues, limb function, alcohol or drug dependence, or psychiatric illness.

Enrolment Requirements:

Given the critical nature of confined space work and the importance of clear communication, assessments are conducted in English, with no provision for interpreters.

Certification

A Level 2 Award in Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces (6160-01) certificate will be issued.
